Vancouver Chinese Gardens

Type: Branding, Graphic Design - Print

About: In partnership with Vancouver Chinese Gardens, my graphic design partner (Angela Cheung) and I collaborated with the Education Coordinator to design a children’s version of the existing Dr. Sun Yat Sen Classical Chinese Garden map. Together, we took the existing branding and developed an adapted whimsical version, including a new style guide and illustrations. This project is currently being prepared for print.

Research: The project involved visiting the garden and receiving a walking tour highlighting its historical and cultural details. We discovered many elements we hadn't initially noticed, such as the porcelain floor stone patterns and bat engravings throughout the roof tiles and furniture. This experience was invaluable in helping us consolidating all the information into the most important facts. Some animal facts and cultural symbols required additional research. Together, we adapted the copy into kid-friendly language.

Visual Identity Concept: We chose a bright and vibrant color palette to create a whimsical style. Our goal for the pamphlet is to be both memorable and interactive, so we used black-and-white outlines for the animals, allowing kids to colour them in once they take the pamphlet home.
